THE IDEA
During the 1950s, Schulenburger Landstrasse 152 in the north of Hanover was home to the Fritz Pomp stockings factory that gives our project its name. Envisioned as a new studio and cultural center, P O M P’s goal is to create affordable and barrier-free work, project and exhibition spaces in an approximately 700 m² hall. A center for the arts as a place of community with a future!
For P O M P it's all about encounters and collaborations: between colleagues and neighbors, as well as people from the region and abroad. We want to break down barriers in order to create an inspiring and welcoming location for everyone in Hanover and beyond.
We have high standards for accessibility and diversity, which is why we are not only planning low-barrier studios and workspaces, but also the approximately 150 m² exhibition space P O M P - ZENTRALE (AT) with an open foyer and a mobile coffee bar. In the long term, these spaces will be managed by a team of curators in collaboration with other local projects and individuals. The accessible infrastructure will also include a meeting and community space with a kitchen, as well as sanitary facilities and storage areas. In addition, there will be a workspace for META COPY - Zentrale für Künstler*innenpublikationen, a guest studio for niki residency and an office for shared administration.
There are already a number of different artist collectives and communities that have their studios and workshops in the immediate vicinity of P O M P. Until now, there has been nowhere for the numerous initiatives to meet for collegial exchange and collaboration, and nowhere for the wider public to get involved. This is precisely what we want to provide with the P O M P studio and cultural center!
The P O M P project is managed collectively by members of Niki e.V.
P O M P STUDIOS
Our project is dedicated to providing long-term, affordable and accessible workspaces for artists and creative collectives. P O M P STUDIOS will comprise four community studios with integrated storage space of approximately 200 m². These studios, which feature various sizes and flexible, customisable divisions will accommodate up to 20 artists.
P O M P – ZENTRALE (AT)
The exhibition and project space P O M P - ZENTRALE (AT) will be a vibrant hub for exchange and collective artistic and curatorial practice. The space of about 150 m² will be used for exhibitions, events and a broad outreach programme. It can also serve as a workspace for particularly large-format works by the residing artists and surrounding studios during breaks in the programme. The curators – Nora Brünger and Theresa Tolksdorf – who have collaborated on projects at the Kunstverein Hildesheim in recent years, plan to focus their exhibition programme on local artists and studio communities from Hanover and the immediate neighborhood in Hainholz, for example by teaming up with with local initiatives. Additionally, the programme will highlight relevant national and international art positions by inviting a range of guest curators and artists in residence. The exhibition programme aims to strengthen the local and regional art scene while connecting it with national and international perspectives. Questions of accessibility and community, which accompany the overall project, play an important role in this approach.
NIKI RESIDENCY
Niki residency is the residency program of Niki e.V.. Founded in 2019 by artists and culture workers, it is geared towards international artists and curators who are invited to spend an extended period of time in Hanover, working on individual projects while connecting with the local scene. To this end, niki residency has been organizing studio visits, workshops, lectures, talks and dinners. They also collaborate with various project spaces and organizations in Hanover and beyond. During their residency, the guest artists and curators will have access to the 20 m² guest studio in the new studio and cultural center P O M P. We’re excited to see them team up with P O M P - ZENTRALE (AT), META COPY and other projects in the area!
META COPY – ZENTRALE FÜR KÜNSTLER*INNENPUBLIKATIONEN
META COPY - Zentrale für Künstler*innenpublikationen Hanover is a location for the discussion, production and distribution of artists’ publications. Since 2020, independent book projects have been developed, accompanied by workshops, artist talks and temporary exhibitions that are supported by the META COPY Team. META COPY sees itself as a working laboratory, library and forum for ideas and discussion. It’s all about simple, accessible, direct and experimental printing and copying processes. Like niki residency, META COPY previously had its own space among the studio spaces at Weißenburgstraße 2a, which served as a workshop and exhibition space. We're so excited to welcome META COPY to our new studio and cultural center, P O M P! We can't wait to provide them with a fresh space to continue developing, reimagining and transforming their project.
